Alberto Ballarin

Alberto Ballarin

One of Story in a Bottle Wines’s exclusive winemakers is Alberto Ballarin. The Ballarin family has been making Barolo in Piedmont, Italy since the early 1900s. Growing up on the family vineyard just outside of La Morra, it was always assumed that Alberto would one day take the reins. But Alberto wanted to round out his winemaking skills before taking over, so he spent a few years working in the vineyards in Australia and then South Africa where he deepened his knowledge and developed new skills.

It was in South Africa that Alberto saw some graffiti of a figure sitting on a tightrope reading a newspaper. The image resonated with Alberto, who could identify with the need for balance at the edge of his new life. He decided to adopt the image for the label of his wines and added a glass of wine to signify his profession, switched the newspaper to a book to represent his curiosity and added an umbrella as a tribute to the importance of weather in the making of wine. It’s not your average Barolo label, but Alberto’s wines aren’t your average Barolos either.
