Carménère

Carménère

The story of the Carménère grape is fascinating. It’s a French grape that was thought to extinct because of the phylloxera outbreak in the late 19th century. It was “rediscovered” in 1994 in Chile, where it had been used is winemaking for decades but mistakenly thought to be Merlot.

Brad Binko, the owner and winemaker behind Drink Washington State and Eternal Wines, traveled to Chile to study how winemakers there grow and produce Carménère, and he made an amazing documentary about it, which we highly recommend, called Through the Grapevine: The (Almost) Tragic Story of Carménère (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucKOK6oRKVs).
