Explore European Wines of Germany, Portugal & Spain

French and Italian wines, understandably, sit atop the world of European wines. However, there are many other European wines that shouldn’t be overlooked. Germany, Portugal, and Spain have long and proud winemaking traditions, and each country produces wines of high quality and exceptional value.

Germany’s cooler terroir is perfect for Riesling, which originated along the Rhine River valley. The grape is now grown in every wine region of the world, but German winemakers are famous for their devotion to the grape and continue to set the bar for which all other Rieslings are measured.

Winemaking in Portugal has experienced a quiet revolution over the past few decades, which has been largely isolated from the rest of Europe because its 250-plus indigenous grapes (most unknown and unpronounceable outside the country) have required a different path. The result is a whole host of unique white and red blends, led by Vinho Verde and Vinho Tinto.

Spain is experiencing a second winemaking revolution. It’s first revolution stemmed from French winemakers fleeing Bordeaux during the mid-1800s phylloxera outbreak. Now, a new generation of winemakers, armed with passion, investments and new technology, are exploring the country’s mix of indigenous and international grapes varieties to create an up-and-coming wine lover’s paradise.
