Il Colombaio di Santa Chiara

Il Colombaio di Santa Chiara

Winemaking at Il Colombaio di Santa Chiara is a family affair. The patriarch of the estate is Mario Logi, who started farming the land in San Gimignano as a teenager in the 1950s. He developed a deep respect for the land and the lesson he taught his son Alessio, who founded the vineyard in 2002, is what drives their winemaking today – wine is a reflection of the land and while it’s quality can be enhanced by the winemaker in the cellar, it can’t be fundamentally changed.

That’s why Alessio, and his brothers Giampiero and Stefano are so devoted to organic farming. From careful cultivation of the vines to the manual selection of grapes during harvest, the Logi family take great care of their vineyards, which is reflected in the stunning quality of their wines, especially their Vernaccia.

In Tuscany, Sangiovese reigns supreme, but in the Tuscan town of San Gimignano, where Il Colombaio is located, it’s the white grape Vernaccia that rules. Vernaccia is the only white grape in Tuscany with DOCG status. In fact, Vernaccia may be one of Italy’s oldest white wines. It merited mention in Dante’s The Divine Comedy, written in the early 1300s. Michelangelo was reported to be a big fan as well.

Vernaccia is famous for its complexity, crisp acidity, citrus fruit flavors, soft minerality and its signature almond finish. Il Colombaio’s Vernaccia has been gaining critical renown and receiving awards since its inception. We’re also excited to be offering their Chianti Colli Sensi DOCG, which is everything you want a Chianti to be.
